STAMPS of BRITISH GUIANA and GUYANA |
|
|
A Collection of Over 300 Stamps spanning 160 Years
Guyana, as British Guiana, was the nineteenth country in the world to begin issuing its own postage stamp in 1850, ten years after Great Britain issued the world’s first adhesive postage stamp in May 1840. This documentary, backed with appropriate music, captures those important stamps, including first-day issues, over those years. These stamps have helped shape Guyanese way of life and have instilled a great awareness of the country’s diversity, resources, anthropology, history, and geography in addition to being a rich legacy of our heritage.
It has long been recognized that stamps serve as a recording media and source of information that illustrates the social, commercial, political, cultural, historical, geographical, and artistic aspects of a society in their own unique style. Using short and abstract text, color graphics and symbols on a limited surface area to communicate its contents is the key attribute that differentiates stamp from other non-book material. For this unique attribute, the stamp can be deemed both as a communication tool and a work of art.
In this carefully developed documentary, get a glimpse of those issues and notions that helped shape Guyanese way of thinking from colonial times right down to current day events. See the images of British monarchs like Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI, and Elizabeth II on some of these stamps. Other members of the British royalty like the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, the late Princess Diana are also featured on some of Guyana’s postage stamps.
